Burberry Overview
Burberry was founded in 1856 by 21 year old Thomas Burberry. He started by opening an outfitters shop in England and became known with the increased development of outdoor wear for residence and visitors to his store. Thomas Burberry invented "garbardine" which is an extremely durable, breathable fabric where the yarn was waterproofed before weaving. Burberry opened his first shop in London back in 1891. In 1901 Burberry was commissioned by the War Office to design a new uniform for the British officers. It was at this time when the Burberry Equestrian Knight logo was developed. The Burberry Check was first introduced as a lining to the trenchcoat in 1924. The red, camel, black and white check became their registered trademark. In 1967 the Burberry Check pattern was incorporated into unbrellas, luggage and scarfs. Burberry opened a New York flagship store in the 1970's and continued with store openings around the United States. In 1997 Burberry once again came out with new design collections and reinvented themselves in both Classic and Modern design categories. Burberry's new fragrance was introduced in 2000. Burberry has since then developed into a Worldwide company, offering an array of handbags, wallets, shoes, jewelry, apparel and fragrances for both men and women.
